Amy Winehouse documentary heading to Cannes

British soul singer Amy Winehouse, who died of alcohol poisoning in 2011, will be the subject of a new, as-yet-untitled documentary from director Asif Kapadia. Winehouse is best remembered for 2006’s Back to Black, which was certified double platinum in the United States and made her an international star. (It is still very, very good.)

The doc is set up with producer James Gay-Rees through Playmaker Films. Gay-Rees and Kapadia previously teamed on the documentary Senna, which Kapadia also directed.

“Amy was a once-in-a-generation talent who captured everyone’s attention,” Gay-Rees and Kapadia said in a statement. “She wrote and sung from the heart and everyone fell under her spell. But tragically Amy seemed to fall apart under the relentless media attention, her troubled relationships, her global success and precarious lifestyle.”

Focus Features plans to shop the film at Cannes next month; Universal Music Group is co-producing. The BBC reports that Kapadia plans to use previously unseen footage of the soulstress as well.

Kapadia’s credits include his 2010 documentary on the Brazilian racing champion — which EW said “expertly contrasts episodes of adrenaline-rush speed with moments of reflective slow motion” — as well as 2001’s Warrior, with Bollywood star Irrfan Khan.
