A series finale is like a laboratory-conceived psychotic porcupine monster: It has a very long tail, and it will make you cry. Nearly five months after Fringe said goodbye by sending Walter Bishop (John Noble) into the far future to save Peter (Joshua Jackson), Olivia (Anna Torv) and the rest of humanity (thanks!) by changing history, the cult classic squirrels back into our field of vision one more time to drop its last DVD and take a bow. Fringe: The Complete Fifth And Final Season, on sale this coming Tuesday (also known as May 7), contains some extra content, including interviews with series co-creator J.J. Abrams, longtime show runner/exec producer J.H.Wyman, and John Noble. In the exclusive excerpt below, they discuss the opportunity to wrap the series on their own terms and their vision for a satisfying end. I was struck by Wyman’s emphasis on a “logical” conclusion to a complex saga and the very specific thematic ideas he wanted to give each character:
