Robin Roberts accepts Arthur Ashe Courage Award

While last night’s ESPY awards provided some big laughs, the awards show also provided moments of profundity when awards were given out to Jack Hoffman, the young boy from Nebraska who got to play alongside his Nebraska football heroes; the Hoyts, who have run hundreds of races with each other — father pushing his cerebral palsy-stricken son to the finish line; and to the amazingly talented Robin Roberts, who overcame not one but two life-threatening illnesses.

When the Arthur Ashe Courage Award was given to Roberts, it’s hard to imagine that there was a dry eye in the house. Tom Cruise narrated a package detailing her life from childhood in segregated Mississippi to breaking barriers and becoming a sportsnewscaster at ESPN and an anchor on Good Morning America.

The auditorium gave Roberts a standing ovation — and deservedly so. With her hair growing out from recent treatment for myelodysplastic syndrome (after battling breast cancer five years ago), Roberts looked absolutely stunning in a red gown and her acceptance speech was just as moving as you’d expect it to be — I’m especially loving the shout out she gave to sister Sally Ann, who gave her bone marrow.
