NBC cancels 'Fashion Star'

Sorry Fashion Star fans, looks like Jessica Simpson and the gang won’t be back for a third season.

At the Television Critics Association press tour, NBC Entertainment President Bob Greenblatt confirmed that the struggling competition series would be ending its short run. Fashion Star premiered in the beginning of 2012 but suffered some setbacks, starting with the departure of original host and executive producer Elle Macpherson at the end of the first season. British style personality Louise Roe stepped in for the second season, joining mentors Jessica Simpson, Nicole Richie and John Varvatos.

NBC’s version of Project Runway was more business-oriented, with contestants also being judged by buyers from Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue and H&M. Each week, aspiring designers put their collections up for grabs by any of the retailers; if your clothes weren’t sold, then you were up for elimination. The trio of mentors could save one contestant, while another one would be eliminated by the buyers. The winner of the competition received $6 million. By the second season, however, the prize got knocked down by a few million bucks and the judges decided to split up their mentoring duties. Elimination rules also changed so that Simpson, Richie and Varvatos were charged with choosing two contestants to be up for elimination, with the buyers ultimately choosing one . Confused, yet?

Fashion Star was bumped from day to day on the NBC schedule, eventually settling in on the Friday schedule. Unfortunately, the series finale only managed to muster up 2.5 million viewers. As Heidi Klum would say, “Auf weidersehen.”
