Sam Champion leaving ABC News for The Weather Channel

Sam Champion will be leaving ABC news for the Weather Channel, according to an announcement by ABC today.

“Our friend and colleague Sam Champion is leaving ABC News for a new opportunity at the Weather Channel. He will become the on-air face of the network, appearing as a host and serving as managing editor. Sam calls it a once in a lifetime opportunity,” wrote Ben Sherwood, ABC News President, in a press release.

Champion will serve as a host and managing editor at the Weather Channel. He is currently the weather anchor for Good Morning America. Meteorologist Ginger Zee will take over his position at GMA and ABC News.

Champion also shared the news on his Twitter:

“GMA will celebrate Sam’s last day on Wednesday’s program. While he is leaving ABC News, he will always be a part of our family,” wrote Sherwood.

Champion worked for the network for 25 years, joining WABC in 1988 and Good Morning America in 2006.
