Casting Net: John Goodman joins 'The Gambler'; Plus Gerard Butler

• John Goodman (Inside Llewyn Davis) has reportedly joined the cast of The Gambler. The veteran actor joins Mark Wahlberg, Brie Larson, and Jessica Lange in the Rupert Wyatt-directed remake ofthe 1974 James Caan pic that was loosely inspired by a Dostoyevsky novella. William Monahan, who won an Oscar for The Departed, wrote the script. According to the report, Goodman will play a loan shark in the film which likely won’t hit theaters till 2015. In addition to his role in the Coen brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis, Goodman can be seen next in George Clooney’s The Monuments Men, out Feb. 7, 2014. [The Wrap]

• Gerard Butler (Olympus Has Fallen) is in final talks to join the Point Break remake. He’d play Bodhi the surfer, a role originated by Patrick Swayze in Kathryn Bigelow’s 1991 cult classic. The part of Johnny Utah — the FBI agent played by Keanu Reeves in the original — has not been cast yet. Ericson Core, a cinematographer best known for shooting The Fast and the Furious, is directing the pic off a script from Salt scribe Kurt Wimmer. [THR]

• Victoria Summer, who has a bit part as a young Julie Andrews in Saving Mr. Banks, and Chris Klein (American Pie) are set to star in the World War II thriller The Uberkanone. German actor Werner Daehn (Valkyrie) will also star in the project about an American pilot flying for France. Documentary director Damien Lay will make his feature debut on the film. Summer will appear alongside Mark Wahlberg this summer in Transformers: Age of Extinction, out June 27, 2014. [The Wrap]
