We break down which Valentine's Day movie you should see

No Valentine’s Day is complete without a ridiculous amount of chocolate and a trip to the movie theater to see the latest over-the-top cheesy romance. And the way I see it, you have three options in the movie department this year. In terms of chocolate, your options are limitless. Go crazy!

The first romantic comedy on the docket is About Last Night, starring Michael Ealy, Joy Bryant, Kevin Hart, and Regina Hall. Of all your options, this seems to be the least cheesy of the bunch while still having many of the necessary ingredients for a good Valentine’s Day film. For starters, it gets point for Ealy’s attractiveness. Hey, this is Valentine’s Day. Being shallow is allowed!

Then, we’ve got Hart to add the humor, and did I mention there’s a scene in the rain? That gives it bonus points. All in all, this is your most down-to-earth option. About Last Night, a remake of the 1986 film starring Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, and Jim Belushi, follows two best friends as they navigate the dating world, one woman at a time — until one of them falls in love. From there, it’s all “Who will say ‘I love you’ first?” and “What does this mean?”

In general, About Last Night seems like a solid pick for a chick flick to see on Valentine’s Day, or any day, for that matter.

Now, your second option takes things in a whole new direction. We go from down-to-earth to otherworldly with Winter’s Tale, which follows a criminal as he falls in love with a dying girl and [insert some sort of time travel/immortality here].

Of course, this movie gets points for the hotness factor, casting both Colin Farrell and Russell Crowe. And while I’m at it, I’ll award it a few more points for the accents (it’s a thing). And if you’re one of those people who enjoys crying at romances, I’m thinking this is your best bet. Other than that, I’m not sure what to make of this film. It definitely has a fantastical element to it, if that’s your thing. And if you want to have your faith renewed that love conquers all, I’d suggest you buy your ticket now (but don’t hate me if it ends badly).

Personally, the Colin Farrell of it all is enough to make me go, even with that haircut.

Option No. 3 is pretty much absolutely everything you expect from a good crappy Valentine’s Day flick. Everyone, say hello to Endless Love, the non-Nicholas Sparks film that looks an awful lot like a Nicholas Sparks film. Endless Love — also a remake, of the 1981 Brooke Shields-starring original — stars hot-to-some Alex Pettyfer as the bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks who falls in love with the wealthy girl (played by Gabriella Wilde) whose family doesn’t quite approve. Sound familiar? She’s all, “Give me a reason to stay,” and he’s taking out his anger by building a house punching a bag.

To be honest, this movie looks awful in all the right ways. If you can handle Pettyfer for an entire movie, I’ll see you at the theater:

So there you have it: If you want a solid, everyday chick flick, go see About Last Night. If you want crazy fantasy, try out Winter’s Tale. And if you’re ready to overdose on all this Valentine’s Day so-bad-it’s-good crap, book your ticket for Endless Love. And if all else fails, screw Valentine’s Day and go see The Lego Movie again.
