Casting Net: Ryan Gosling might play Busby Berkeley

• Ryan Gosling may direct and star in a biopic of famed director and choreographer Busby Berkeley. Warner Bros. has optioned Jeffrey Spivak’s book Buzz: The Life and Art of Busby Berkeley for Gosling and Marc Platt (Drive) to produce. Berkeley was known for his elaborate, geographic dance numbers in studio musicals such as 42nd Street and Golddiggers of 1933. He moved on to directing films like Babes on Broadway and For Me and My Gal. It’s still very early in the process, and no writer is currently attached. [THR]

• Channing Tatum is reportedly in talks to co-direct an adaption of the Jo Nesbo‘s Norwegian crime thriller The Son alongside his producing partner Reid Carolin. There is a possibility that Tatum would eventually sign on to star as well, but they still need to get a screenwriter and a script before that happens. [Deadline]

• Ron Livingston (Office Space) has joined the cast of The End of the Tour. James Ponsoldt (The Spectacular Now) is directing the film, based on the true story of the late David Foster Wallace’s book tour for Infinite Jest. Rolling Stone reporter David Lipsky accompanied Wallace on the final leg and wrote his account in the book Although Of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself: A Road Trip With David Foster Wallace. Jason Segel will play Wallace in the film adaptation and Jesse Eisenberg will play Lipsky. Livingston will portray Lipsky’s editor Bob Levin. [Deadline]

• Comedian Rob Riggle (21 Jump Street) has joined the cast of Absolutely Anything, starring Simon Pegg, Kate Beckinsale, Eddie Izzard, and Robin Williams. Monty Python’s Terry Jones is directing the pic about a teacher who discovers he has magical powers. It will feature the voices of his Python mates Terry Gilliam, John Cleese, and Michael Palin. • Kurt Fuller (Psych) will join Taryn Manning in the coming-of-age indie A Light Beneath Their Feet about a high school student (Madison Davenport) who doesn’t know whether she should go to college or stay home to take care of her bipolar mother. [Variety]
