'How I Met Your Mother' creator stands by series finale

The polarizing series finale of How I Met Your Mother had TV viewers from Twitter to EW.com weighing in on the many, many Earth-shattering twists, but executive producer Craig Thomas is hoping to have the final word.

Overnight, the co-creator — who helmed the series for nine seasons alongside Carter Bays — took to Twitter to send his thanks for fans and defend the finale, which saw Robin and Ted end up together six years after the Mother passed away.

“We wrote a comedy with dramatic elements till the very end,” he said in a series of Tweets. “Thanks for taking that ride with us. #HIMYM“

Among other twists for the evening? Barney and Robin divorced after only three years of marriage and Barney had a child with a woman with whom he had a one night stand.

“We did a finale about life’s twists and turns and that is not always what happens…but THANKS!” Thomas wrote.

How I Met Your Mother‘s super-sized farewell earned the comedy its highest ratings ever, with over 12.9 million viewers and a 5.3 rating in the 18-49 demo.
