'Modern Family', ABC footing the bill for NYC marriage licenses Monday

In a heartwarming publicity stunt, ABC is paying for New York City couples to get married to promote Cam and Mitchell’s upcoming wedding on the season finale of ABC’s Modern Family.

Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson went on Good Morning America Monday morning to talk their fictional nuptials, which will be the center of the series’ final two episodes of the season, and to announce that ABC will be covering all marriage licenses at the New York City courthouse Monday.

Mitchell (Ferguson) and Cam’s (Stonestreet) wedding has been the focus of the past season of Modern Family and hasn’t been without tension — in the most recent episode, Jay told Mitchell he’s uncomfortable with going to a male-male wedding in a heated conversation that ended in Mitchell telling Jay not to attend.

“I actually really applaud the writers for sort of going there with that relationship, because I think it’s something very real and a lot of parents sort of have their own evolution with accepting a gay kid, and certainly Jay is going there with Mitchell,” Ferguson, who married Justin Mikita this past July, said.
