A sequel to Enchanted is in the works

Seven years after Amy Adams brought fairy tales into modern New York City, Enchanted is—finally!—continuing after ever, ever after, according to Deadline.

J. David Stem and David N. Weiss (Shrek 2, The Smurfs) will write a sequel to Enchanted, with Anne Fletcher (The Proposal, The Guilt Trip) set to direct the follow-up to Disney's worldwide hit, according to Deadline's report. There currently isn't any word on whether any or all of the original stars—Amy Adams, James Marsden, Patrick Dempsey, Idina Menzel, and Susan Sarandon, among others—will return, or what exactly the plot details will be. (Reps for Adams and Disney didn't immediately respond to EW's request for confirmation.)

The original, of course, ended with a happily-ever-after of sorts, with Giselle (Adams) choosing to stay in New York City with Robert (Dempsey), and Prince Edward (Marsden) returning to the animated fairytale land Andelasia and marrying Nancy (Menzel).

Some pure speculation: Perhaps Menzel—who, post-Frozen, is a much bigger draw now, particularly with the Disney set—will head up the reboot. After all, her character was the one who still liked the fairytale concepts of "true love" and "happily ever after," so that may be an easy way for Disney to continue to have some fun with the tropes on which Disney's empire was built. Maybe a now-thoroughly-modern Giselle and Robert will have to return to Andalasia and help out Edward and Nancy with problems in the kingdom that helpful animals can't solve.

Also of possible interest to the screenwriters: The nearly decade-long gap between the film's two releases means the timing works for Robert's daughter to now be modernly princess-esque (think Anne Hathaway in Princess Diaries), and is at the ideal age to experience True Love's Kiss—or maybe her own trip to Andalasia.
