Emma Watson, star of the Harry Potter film franchise and recent Brown University graduate, has a new honor to add to her resume: United Nations Goodwill Ambassador.
U.N. Women, a branch of the United Nations devoted to gender equality, announced Monday that Watson is their latest Goodwill Ambassador. Watson is the first appointment under Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, who became U.N. Women’s executive director a year ago.
“We are thrilled and honored to work with Emma, whom we believe embodies the values of U.N. Women,” Mlambo-Ngcuka said in a statement. As an ambassador, Watson will work with U.N. Women’s HeForShe campaign to help empower women and fight gender inequality around the world.
“Women’s rights are something so inextricably linked with who I am, so deeply personal and rooted in my life that I can’t imagine an opportunity more exciting,” Watson said in a statement. “I still have so much to learn, but as I progress I hope to bring more of my individual knowledge, experience and awareness to this role.”
