Petition for Weird Al to play the Super Bowl reaches 50k signatures

Weird Al Yankovic could be this year's Super Bowl halftime performer, if some determined fans have their way.

Ed Ball created a petition on change.org to have Yankovic play the Super Bowl, and as of Thursday morning, the petition has gotten over 50,000 signatures. "The theatrics alone would be hilarious and a welcoming change," Ball wrote, "and draw a wider audience of fans that typically would not tune into the championship game or half-time show."

He had a lot more to say about the halftime choices too, including a rant against some past—and potential—half-time acts: "I do not want to sit through another Black Eyes Peas disaster or see Nicki Minaj verbal vomit some lyrics that I cannot understand," Ball wrote on the site after receiving 4,000 signatures. "And do you want Miley Cyrus?!? Because this is how you will end up with Miley Cyrus!!!"

Yankovic made the internet rounds in July when he released a series of videos parodying hit songs, including Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" and Pharrell's "Happy," to promote his 14th album Mandatory Fun. The album, released July 15, went on to earn Yankovic his first No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200.

Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers performed at the last Super Bowl's halftime show, and Beyoncé—along with, briefly, the rest of Destiny's Child—took the stage the year before. The next Super Bowl will take place on Feb. 1, 2015 in Arizona.
