Judge rules lawsuit against Bryan Singer can be dropped

A federal judged in Hawaii ruled on Wednesday, Aug. 28 that Michael Egan III can drop his lawsuit against director Bryan Singer. In the ruling, the judge also stated that Egan's case would be dismissed without prejudice, allowing Egan to refile in the future.

As the AP originally reported, Egan requested to dismiss the lawsuit due to his inability to find a new lawyer to represent him. An attorney advising Egan reportedly told the AP that Egan approved of the ruling and "got everything he wanted."

Singer attempted to have the lawsuit dismissed with prejudice so it could not be reopened, but U.S.District Judge Susan Oki Mollway denied Singer's request.

One of Singer's attorneys reportedly said that while the case was not dismissed based on a lack of merit, "we're pleased that it's over."

The original suit claimed Singer had abused Egan in 1999, when Egan was only 17. Egan filed the suit against Singer in April, as well as three separate suits accusing other Hollywood executives of similar abuse. Though Singer denied the claims, he did drop out of the promotional campaign for his film X-Men: Days of Future Past.
