Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Oliver Stone likely to team up for Edward Snowden movie

Is the Hollywood forecast calling for 500 Days of Snowden?

According to Variety, Joseph Gordon-Levitt has been offered the role of Edward Snowden in Oliver Stone’s upcoming film about the NSA whistleblower, The Snowden Files. No official deal has been made between the two parties, but it seems the Don Jon star has agreed to play the part of the former U.S. intelligence analyst responsible for the largest leak of classified documents in American history since the Vietnam War.

Stone is no stranger to the political genre, having directed W., Nixon, Born on the Fourth of July, and more . The role would be the second straight biopic for Gordon-Levitt, who just finished production on Robert Zemeckis‘ The Wire, about famed high-wire artist Philippe Petit. In addition to directing, Stone is writing the script for the film, which will be based loosely on Snowden’s lawyer Anatoly Kucherena’s book Time of the Octopus. Sony is working on its own Snowden film with James Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli of EON Productions based on the Glenn Greenwald book, No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA, and the U.S. Surveillance State. Production for Stone’s film could start as early as the end of the year.
