Watch Frances McDormand in the trailer for 'Olive Kitteridge'

In the new trailer for HBO’s miniseries Olive Kitteridge, Frances McDormand doles out blunt dialogue as the titular character.

Throughout the trailer one can see how Olive’s age changes over the course of the miniseries, which is adapted from Elizabeth Strout’s novel. “I just want to say one thing,” Olive tells a group of school children. “Don’t be scared of your hunger. If you’re scared of your hunger you’re one more ninny just like everyone else.” When Bill Murray’s character tells an older-looking Olive to give him “a reason to wake up in the morning,” revealing that his wife died, she says: “Don’t have a clue. I’m waiting for the dog to die so I can shoot myself.”

The Lisa Cholodenko-directed miniseries won the admiration of critics when it premiered at the Venice Film Festival, and the trailer also shows the interaction between Richard Jenkins as Olive’s husband, Henry, and Zoe Kazan as a woman who works in Henry’s pharmacy. John Gallagher Jr. appears in an angry moment as Olive’s son. Olive Kitteridge airs Nov. 2 and 3.
