Grammys 2015: Sam Smith reveals 'incredible' backstage moment with Stevie Wonder

“I’m actually weirdly relaxed at the moment,” Sam Smith told reporters on the red carpet in advance of the 57th Annual Grammy Awards. “I think people forget this is an award show. It’s supposed to be a celebration of music. I’ve had the most incredible year. Whether I get an award or don’t, I feel like I’ve already won.”

But, he did, in fact, win. And he won big, taking home awards for Best New Artist, Best Pop Vocal Album for In the Lonely Hour, and both Song of the Year and Record of the Year for “Stay With Me.”

When asked what makes his music stand out, he explained that the key for him is honesty. “I live my life and I write music about it,” he said. “I also am not ashamed of making sad music. My music, to me, it’s not sad. To me, it’s empowering. I make these records so I don’t have to think about it, so I can be happy and enjoy nights like this.”

It’s clearly worked: At Los Angeles’ Staples Center Sunday night, there were at least 100 fans, probably more, piled on top of each other, just trying to get a glimpse of Smith. The enthusiasm was palpable. But, ironically, even Smith got starstruck today.

“I was in my changing room, and Stevie Wonder who was next to my changing room, asked me to come into his room. I walked in and he started playing my song [‘I’m Not The Only One’] to me. He started singing it to me,” he said. “I was like, what the f–k. I freaked out I got on my phone and filmed a little bit. What do you do? It was incredible.”

So what’s next for Smith? Another album is in store. “I’ve already started writing and the music I’ve been writing is way more honest than my first, which is scary but I’m looking to remain relatable. That’s my main vision.��
