Willie Nelson, Charlotte Rampling tapped to star in 'Waiting For the Miracle'

Willie Nelson’s hitting the silver screen again.

The country music legend will star in Waiting For the Miracle to Come (directed/written by Lian Lunson) alongside Charlotte Rampling and Sophie Lowe, it was announced Wednesday. Shooting for the project begins in March at Nelson’s private ranch in Spicewood, Texas. It marks the 81-year-old’s first feature film since 2013’s Angels Sing.

“I wrote this script for Willie Nelson, his presence and stillness as an actor is unlike anyone else,” Lunson said in a statement to EW. “And growing up I always wanted to be Charlotte Rampling, so bringing these two icons together on screen is a dream come true for me.”

The story is set in a “magically surreal world” and follows the adventure of aspiring trapeze artist Adeline Winter (Lowe) that directs her to a California goldmine. Upon her arrival, she comes across a house, whose inhabitants are Jimmy and Dixie Riggs (Nelson and Rampling), retired vaudeville stars.

The recruiting of music titans goes beyond just Willie: U2 frontman Bono will pen an original song for the production and will be performed by Nelson.

This marks the second time Nelson and Lunson have collaborated: Lunson directed the 1997 TV movie Willie Nelson: Down Home. (Coincidentally, Bono and Nelson perform together in it.)

Playing his spouse is Rampling, the 69-year-old acclaimed English actress who recently appeared in ITV’s Broadchurch. The series was remade for American audiences as Gracepoint on FOX.

The film is being produced by Lunson’s Horse Pictures, Molly Mayeux, and Terence Berry, and executive produced by Cave Pictures’ Dale Brown and Mark Rodgers. Fabrica de Cine will also produce the film, with Gaston Pavlovich (producer) and Matthew Malek (executive producer) on board.
