Oscars 2015: 'Birdman' wins Best Picture

Birdman won the 2015 Oscar for Best Picture, clinching the prize that many considered up for grabs between Alejandro González Iñárritu’s tragic comedy about a once-famous superhero actor and Richard Linklater’s Boyhood. Birdman had won many of the major guilds’ prizes, a promising indicator for success, and the film delivered, winning several crucial early prizes on Oscar night, including Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Cinematography. Somehow, the film lost out for Best Editor, a slight surprise since the film was carefully edited to feel like the entire film was shot in one long cut.

Michael Keaton, who starred as Riggan Thomson, a frustrated actor trying to rescusicate his career by staging an ambitious Broadway production, lost the Best Actor race to Eddie Redmayne, but on the stage with the Birdman crew for Best Picture, he said, “Look, it’s great to be here. Who am I kidding?”
