James McAvoy and Gillian Anderson were among those honored for their work on the British stage with Olivier Award nominations.

McAvoy, who announced the nominations with Lesley Manville Monday, was nominated for Best Actor for his work in The Ruling Class, alongside Mark Strong for A View from the Bridge, Tim Pigott-Smith for King Charles III, and Richard Armitage for The Crucible. Anderson, nominated for A Street Car Named Desire, competes in the Best Actress category against Kristin Scott Thomas in Electra, Imelda Staunton in Good People, and Penelope Wilton in Taken at Midnight.

Two musicals which have already hit Broadway led the nominations, with Memphis The Musical receiving nine nominations and Beautiful – The Carole King Musical received eight.

Elsewhere, Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger was nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical for the revival of Cats, which was also nominated for Best Musical Revival, and the stage production of Shakespeare in Love was nominated for Best New Comedy.
