For its 20th anniversary, 'Friday' gets 4/20 theatrical release

Friday is returning to theaters for its 20th anniversary—and as the icing on top of that “special” brownie, the cult film hits cinemas on 4/20.

The Ice Cube and Chris Tucker masterpiece, originally released in April 1995, is back for just that one night, through Fathom Events. Superfans, take note: Fathom is showing the Director’s Cut, which has never before been seen in theaters. They’ll also show Friday Straight Up, a special featurette packed with interviews and stories from the cast.

Friday follows Craig (Ice Cube) and Smokey (Chris Tucker) over the course of one Friday, as they scramble to come up with $200 for a local bully so they can live another day.

In an interview with BuzzFeed News, Ice Cube (who also wrote the film) expressed his excitement about its return: “For the theaters, for New Line [Cinema], for the fans to want to pay homage to the movie in this way is cool,” he said. “It lets you know how much people appreciate it and how much fun it is … and it lets you know that Friday is now a part of the American fabric.”
