A deep dive into the 'True Detective' season 2 trailer

The first trailer for True Detective season 2 is out, and it’s full of pensive looks, general angst, and one very mysterious Vince Vaughn.

From what we know of the season, it’s set in California, where Vince Vaugh plans Frank Semyon, a career criminal in danger of losing his life’s work. Then you have the law-enforcement trio: Colin Farrell is Ray Velcoro, “a compromised detective,” Rachel McAdams is Ani Bezzerides, a different detective, and Taylor Kitsch is Paul Woodrugh, a war vet and motorcycle cop for the California Highway Patrol. A strange muder brings them all together… and you can fill in the rest.

For now, we’re focusing on the first trailer and everything it tells us:

Image

Setting: California, where there are a lot of roads. Is this symbolic? Highways crossing paths and intertwining to create the very tangled web that is season 2?

Image

By tomorrow, everyone will have this haircut.

Image

On Wednesdays, we carry guns.

Image

Tim Riggins left his long locks in Texas, and he’s already regretting that decision.

Image

Have those cheekbones always been there? Suddenly, Tim’s back to being all about #noregrets.

Image

Oh, so that’s where all Tim’s hair went! But on a more serious note: Is Ray living in 2015? Does he own a mirror?

Image

If this guy crashes your wedding, you die.

Image

We know Ray’s a compromised detective, but just how dirty is he? Or is Frank actually helping with the case? Better question: Is there history here?

Image

Okay, Ray’s crying. They’re definitely not friends. Also, is it too early to give Farrell an Emmy?

Image

Setting: Night time. Bad stuff is probably happening. Stuff like murder.

Image

So he’s a super fancy businessman who builds buildings and stuff.

Image

Meet Frank’s wife, played by Kelly Reilly. Clearly, she hates her life and drinks to cover up her disdain for her marriage.

Image

There’s not much to say here. It’s really just fun to look at.

Image

“Don’t you ever bring up John Carter in my presence again!”

Image

Another Emmy, please.

Image

New blonde guy is not a friend of Frank’s. Theory #1: He lost a bunch of Frank’s money. Theory #2: He slept with Frank’s wife. Theory #3: He’s a stage-five clinger.

Image

First shot of them all together, and Ani is in the lead. So basically, Ray and Paul are the new Plastics.

Image

Look at that TV. If this is the present day, this police station has some very sad resouces. And does that bolo tie mean Ray’s going to have a southern accent and wear a cowboy hat at some point? If yes, is he actually Yosemite Sam?

Image

Using brass knuckles to punch someone = dark past… and potentially dark present.

Image

“What have we done?”

Image

“A bad thing.”

Image

“Let’s do it again.”

Image

“I won’t tell if you don’t.” (“And if you do, I’ll kill you.”)
