Tony Awards 2015: An American in Paris, 'Fun Home lead nominees

One show sure got “‘S Wonderful” news this morning: An American in Paris.

The dance musical based on Vincente Minnelli’s Oscar-winning 1951 film got lots of amour on Tony nomination morning, racking up an impressive 12 nominations, including four for acting. (Each of those acting nods goes to a first-time nominee, too.) Even with the expected snubs and surprises, underdog appeal was the order of the day, with the Alison Bechdel adaptation Fun Home also receiving 12 nods—and in a rare bit of business, seeing its entire principal cast nominated, including all three actresses who play author Bechdel at various stages of life. One of those actresses is 11 year-old Sydney Lucas, who became one of the youngest Tony nominees in history this morning.

Lest one think this was merely an inside-Broadway love-in, lots of talented Hollywood folk made the cut too—with nods for Bradley Cooper (The Elephant Man), Helen Mirren (The Audience), Carey Mulligan (Skylight), Ruth Wilson (Constellations), and, in a rather surprising announcement, Ken Watanabe, whose performance in The King and I has been divisive among critics.

New this year is a variable number of nominees per category; most of them held at a standard five nominees or less, but Featured Actor in a Play contains six, the first time that has happened in Tony history. (This is due to a new ruling, a la the Academy Awards, that allow for more nominees if the ballot determines unusually strong support beyond a first or second choice.).
