Hunger Games' Amandla Stenberg responds to Baltimore riots

Once again, Hunger Games actress Amandla Stenberg has proven herself wise beyond her 16 years, posting a simple but thoughtful message about the importance of the protests in Baltimore.

Baltimore’s riots stem from the death of Freddie Gray, who suffered a spinal cord injury while in police custody and died seven days later. Stenberg wrote two tweets in response to the widespread condemnation of the riots, as many conservatives and others have focused on the looting that’s resulted instead of the police violence that started the protests.

On Stenberg’s Tumblr, where she initially posted her viral video explaining cultural appropriation, she also reblogged a post that draws an interesting parallel between the Baltimore riots and the riots in The Hunger Games that followed the death of Rue, the character Stenberg played in the franchise.

If it were up to us, Stenberg and fellow young activist actress Zendaya Coleman—who gave a lovely defense of her choice to wear dreadlocks to the Oscars and what locs mean to her culture—would already have their own show or podcast to provide their sharp, clear commentary on current events.
