Who didn't survive the 'Chicago Fire'-'P.D.'-'SVU' crossover?

Warning: This story contains major spoilers from the Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D. and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit crossover.

Not everyone made it out of the big Chicago Fire-Chicago P.D.-Law & Order: SVU crossover event alive.

Following the events of Tuesday’s Chicago Fire—in which Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) came to the windy city because one of their cases was similar to an unsolved rape/murder from the past—the P.D. and SVU squads set their sights on Greg Yates (Dallas Roberts), who in turn kidnapped Nadia (Stella Maeve) before taking her across state lines and murdering her in New York City.

“It became apparent that we needed a body, we needed some teeth in the storytelling,” P.D. and Fire executive producer Matt Olmstead says of planning the latest crossover event. “Not only did it give us some teeth in the crossover, but we also knew that this was going to give us a lot of episodes as it hits everybody—including Platt [Amy Morton], because Platt took her under her wing also—but Lindsay [Sophia Bush] in particular.”

With that said, it’s no accident that Lindsay and Nadia had similar trajectories. “At the beginning of the first season, we had a plan to introduce this character and let her be to Lindsay what Lindsay was to Voight [Jason Beghe],” Olmstead says. “All along, we had this long-range plan to have her be at a low point and slowly Lindsay gets her clean and gets her a job, and she wants to be a cop.”

Therefore, Nadia’s death won’t be “dismissed by a little pep talk or a night out drinking,” Olmstead says. “It sticks with Lindsay in terms of, ‘Where do I belong?’ Lindsay starts to look at her badge like, ‘Am I better off minding my own business, crawling in a bottle and not reaching out to people?’ In the next episode, when she’s at the bar with her mom, her mom says, ‘I’m so sorry you lost your friend,’ she says, ‘I didn’t lose my friend. I got her killed. If I didn’t get in her life and steer her in this direction, she would’ve been doing whatever she was doing.’ She feels directly responsible for the death of Nadia.”
