Reese Witherspoon as Tinker Bell: Disney developing 'Peter Pan' spinoff 'Tink'

Disney’s had some good luck lately refurbishing their most beloved animated films into live-action hits. The Angelina Jolie-fronted Sleeping Beauty riff Maleficent grossed $750 million worldwide last year, and March’s Cinderella is currently the highest-grossing movie of the year that doesn’t star superheroes or flying cars. A new Jungle Book and Beauty & the Beast await in 2016 and 2017, and the studio is already lining up another fairy-tale reimagining. EW has confirmed THR’s report that Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon is developing Tink, a Peter Pan riff focused on Peter’s fairy sidekick.

Witherspoon would produce and star in the movie, and there’s currently a script by Victoria Strouse, who wrote Disney’s upcoming Finding Nemo sequel Finding Dory. It’s unclear how Tink will approach the Peter Pan legend, which is also getting prequelized this summer with Warner Bros’ Pan. Tinker Bell is a key figure in Disney history—for decades, Disney TV shows would begin with Tink flying over Disneyland with her magic wand.

In the 1950s Peter Pan cartoon, she’s mute and mildly jealous—but that’s pretty much it for her iconography, which means there’s plenty of opportunity to expand on the Tinker Bell mythology. Julia Roberts was in her mid-20s when she played Tinker Bell in Hook. Given that Witherspoon is a bit older, it’s possible that the movie could focus on the notion of Tinker Bell as a “grown up”—whatever that means for fairies.
