Jon Stewart, Larry Wilmore riff on Duggar scandal

How did Nightly Show host Larry Wilmore spend last week, when both his program and Jon Stewart’s Daily Show took a brief break? “I just kind of disconnected and caught up with my favorite TV show,” the comedian told Stewart as Daily prepared to hand the baton to Nightly. That TV show? TLC’s 19 Kids and Counting, of course.

“It was just so nice to watch a show about a family with togetherness and good, old-fashioned values,” Wilmore continued as Stewart began scribbling furiously—perhaps preparing to tell the 19 Kids superfan about the scandal that enveloped the Duggar family last week, when Josh Duggar admitted to “wrongdoing” after allegations he molested five underage girls when he was a teenager surfaced.

“I hope nothing happens that makes me recontextualize their closeness and isolation as something dangerous,” concluded the faux-clueless Nightly emcee. Stewart then prepared to break the bad news… before deciding instead not to ruin Wilmore’s “favorite show” for him. The comedian will be in for a rude awakening, though, when he realizes that TLC has yanked all reruns of 19 Kids—and that several big advertisers, including Payless and General Mills, have ended relationships with the reality series. 19 Kids has not yet been canceled.
