Joni Mitchell discusses fame in unearthed 1986 interview

In the latest installment of their Blank on Blank series, PBS has launched a whimsical animation to go along with a 1986 interview music exec Joe Smith conducted with Joni Mitchell. Over its near six minutes pokes fun at her innocence—how little she knew of the drug scene in music—her enjoyment of still doing “normal” things like grocery shopping, and those who welcomed her “normality” versus those who were made uncomfortable by it.

“Some people like it. It makes them feel at ease. It confirms their hopes that you are in fact similar to them. Some people can’t stand it,” she says, providing anecdotes of doing her own grocery shopping or sitting in the general admission ticketed sections of concerts.

Blank on Blank has also featured interviews with the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Jimi Hendrix, Michael Jackson, Johnny Cash, and more.

Mitchell is currently recovering from an undisclosed illness. She was hospitalized at the end of March after being found unconscious in her home.
