Jill Soloway: 'Transparent' helped Bruce Jenner and family

Amazon’s Transparent, about a transgender parent played by Jeffrey Tambor, has a famous fan: Bruce Jenner, who in April sat down with Diane Sawyer to talk about his transition.

In an interview with People at the Television Academy Honors Event Wednesday, Transparent creator Jill Soloway said she learned that Jenner watched her series after meeting Kim Kardashian—and that she’s proud her show helped Jenner’s family understand his identity.

“Knowing that Transparent helped Bruce to see a family where somebody came out and everybody survived, my first phone call was to my parent to say, ‘Look what your bravery did,'” Soloway said, referring to her own “moppa”—on whom Tambor’s character is based. “‘Your bravery allowed me to tell this story. And this story allowed this person to come out. This person who is an American hero, and who is now an American hero for the second time. And who happens to be the patriarch of the most famous family on the planet.'”
