The Dark Tower may be one step closer to reaching the big screen, as a director may be set to take on Stephen King’s franchise.

EW can confirm that Nikolaj Arcel will soon enter talks to direct the Dark Tower film. As Deadline first reported, the deal is far from complete, with talks yet to begin, but if Arcel boards the project, he could both direct and rewrite the script. The current version of the film is being written by Jeff Pinkner and Akiva Goldsman.

Arcel previously directed the Danish film A Royal Affair, which starred Hannibal‘s Mads Mikkelsen and Ex Machina‘s Alicia Vikander. He also co-wrote the Swedish film adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Sony earlier this year announced its plans to develop Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series into a set of films and a television series, after the property bounced around several studios over the last several years. Sony and MRC are set to co-finance the project, with Sony distributing the film while MRC develops the TV show.

No release date or cast has been set. Representatives for Sony did not immediately respond to a request for comment. MRC had no comment on the report.
