'Grace and Frankie' fans create petition to fight gender pay inequality against Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin

UPDATE: In a join statement to EW, Tomlin and Fonda clarified that their comments about their salaries were made in jeset. “We made a joke in an interview about our salaries which was taken out of context,” they wrote. “This just reminds us to be mindful of how things come across in interviews. We appreciate everyone’s support and the attention to this issue but the structure of Grace and Frankie is fair, and we couldn’t be happier to work with Skydance, Netflix and the great cast of this show.”

Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda are the stars of Grace and Frankie. Sam Waterston and Martin Sheen are supporting actors on that same Netflix program. But the all four have the same salary. That math just doesn’t add up, according to over 8,300 people who have signed a petition requesting the series’ pay discrepancy be resolved.

Tomlin and Fonda recently discovered the salary news and have since publicly stated their dissatisfaction with the situation.

“[Tomlin] found out [Sam Waterston and Martin Sheen] are getting the same salary that we are,” Fonda said at a recent Netflix press conference. “That doesn’t make us happy.”

“The show is not Sol and Robert—it’s Grace and Frankie,” Tomlin added.

The actresses are also executive producers on the show, which is centered on two women learning to cope after their husbands reveal that they’re gay and leaving the women for one another.

The Care2 petition—created by Emily Logan—is targeted at Executive Producers Marta Kauffman and Howard J. Morris as well as Netflix VP of Original Series Cindy Holland, and asks that they address the show’s pay disparity immediately.

“In 1980, Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda co-starred in Nine to Five, a comedy about three women who turn the tables on their sexist, bigoted boss, which showed sexism in the workplace in a bold new light,” the petition’s website reads. “Now, ironically, Tomlin and Fonda have revealed at a press event that despite their new Netflix show Grace and Frankie being directly centered around their two characters, they are being paid the same as the male supporting actors who play their ex-husbands.”

“Once the petition has a nice critical mass of signatures, I will download the signatures and send them off to the targets — the executive producers of the show as well as the VP of original programming at Netflix,” Logan told the The Hollywood Reporter.
