Matt Damon is stranded on Mars in first trailer for The Martian

Astronaut Mark Watney is going to have one hell of a story. If he ever returns to Earth, that is.

The first trailer for Ridley Scott’s The Martian presents Watney (Matt Damon), the rest of his Ares 3 crew, and the derailed mission that strands him alone on Mars. After a promotional video introduced viewers to the entire Ares 3 team, the official trailer is a darker look at Watney’s harrowing ordeal.

Based on Andy Weir’s novel of the same name, The Martian is Watney’s journey, first largely presented only from Watney’s point of view, expanding to include his crew and the NASA team back on Earth. The trailer balances those perspectives, rotating among the three points of view as Watney faces surviving four years in a shelter built to last him about a month. So what’s a stranded botanist to do? “Science the s— out of it.”

The film also stars Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Donald Glover, Kate Mara, Michael Peña, and Kristen Wiig. The Martian will hit theaters on Nov. 25.
