Regression, the first film from Oscar winner Alejandro Amenábar since 2009’s Agora, follows a police investigation of child abuse that stumbles upon a much darker conspiracy. And the film’s new trailer demonstrates just how dangerous that conspiracy might be.

Emma Watson’s Angela accuses her father (Daniel Dencik) of abuse, and even though he surprisingly admits his guilt, he claims he cannot remember any of the alleged events. Detective Bruce Kenner (Ethan Hawke) recruits therapist Dr. Raines (David Thewlis) to pull out the father’s repressed memories while Kenner tries to piece the case together. But their work leads them far beyond Angela’s claims of abuse.

Amenábar, who also directed The Others and The Sea Inside, wrote the screenplay for the thriller, which unveiled the first poster in addition to the trailer today. Regression is set to hit theaters on Aug. 28, 2015.
