Fantastic Four cast hasn't seen the film

Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four hits theaters on Aug. 7, which is now just a few days away. And if you’re excited to see Fox’s latest superhero team-up, you’re in good company — the cast says they haven’t seen the finished film yet, either.

“I’m going to try to see it opening night with a real audience,” Kate Mara, a.k.a. Sue Storm, told the BBC’s Newsbeat. Miles Teller (Reed Richards) added, “we haven’t seen it either,” referring also to his co-stars Michael B. Jordan (Johnny Storm) and Jamie Bell (Ben Grimm).

Trank and writer-producer Simon Kinberg rebooted the story of Marvel’s first family to focus on their younger selves. Taking nods from various comic iterations, Fantastic Four will see the quartet becoming Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and The Thing after traveling to another dimension.

The casting of Jordan as Human Torch was a controversial point for some fans, something the cast addressed in an awkward radio interview earlier this week and Jordan also discussed in an essay published by Entertainment Weekly in May, titled, “Why I’m Torching the Color Line.”

“Some people may look at my casting as political correctness or an attempt to meet a racial quota, or as part of the year of ‘Black Film.’ Or they could look at it as a creative choice by the director, Josh Trank, who is in an interracial relationship himself — a reflection of what a modern family looks like today,” the actor wrote. “This is a family movie about four friends — two of whom are myself and Kate Mara as my adopted sister — who are brought together by a series of unfortunate events to create unity and a team. That’s the message of the movie, if people can just allow themselves to see it.”

Though they haven’t seen the finished product, the cast have been making the promotional rounds to drum up further buzz. They conducted a Twitter Q&A on Sunday and teased some electric outtakes and a cool idea for “a meal in a pill.” We’ll find out if their chemistry is truly Fantastic when the film drops Friday.
