Trash trailer: Rooney Mara helps Rio kids do the right thing

Stephen Daldry has a perfect record. Of the four films he’s directed, each one has been nominated for Best Picture, including The Hours and The Reader. Trash is his next film, and though it’s flying slightly under the radar, it certainly looks like the type of film that could keep that streak alive.

Adapted from Andy Mulligan’s novel by Richard Curtis (Love Actually), Trash tells the adventure of three poverty-stricken boys in Rio who discover a valuable wallet during their daily scavenging of the city’s landfill. Turns out there’s more than just cash in that wallet, and the corrupt local authorities are willing to do everything in their power to recover it. Pursued by men with guns, the boys eventually turn to an American priest (Martin Sheen) and his assistant (Rooney Mara) as they try to survive and do the right thing.

The film, which just released a U.S. trailer (above), has already opened in most international territories since debuting at 2014 festivals. It arrives in the U.S. on Oct. 9.
