Bleachers re-release Strange Desire with all women

Ryan Adams isn’t the only musician capable of covering full pop albums. One week after he released his covers of Taylor Swift’s 1989, Bleachers has released a new version of their album Strange Desire, with the songs sung entirely by female artists. Notable guests include Bleachers’ former tour mate Charli XCX (“Rollercoaster”), Carly Rae Jepsen (“Shadow”), Sara Bareilles (“Wild Heart”), and Sia (“Like a River Runs”), among many others.

The new project is titled Terrible Thrills, Vol. 2 — “vol. 2” because Bleachers frontman Jack Antonoff has done this before. His former band Steel Train previously invited a slew of female singers (including Scarlett Johansson, Tegan and Sara, and Amanda Palmer) to cover their self-titled third album as a companion piece in 2010. Antonoff’s released a statement with the new Terrible Thrills, and said that he always writes his songs with female singers in mind.

“I love female voices. I wish I had one,” Antonoff said. “When I write songs I typically hear things in a female voice and then match it an octave lower so I can hit the notes. That’s why so many Bleachers songs are sung so low. I hear my music as my interpretation of a song I’m writing as a female in my head, so I wanted to make that a reality with the artists who inspire me to write in the first place.”

Antonoff also revealed that he is currently at work on the next Bleachers album. Terrible Thrills, Vol. 2 is available for free on Google Play.
