Taika Waititi in talks to direct Thor: Ragnarok for Marvel

Marvel Studios may have found its filmmaker to bring about the twilight of the gods. Taika Waititi is in negotiations to direct Thor: Ragnarok, the third installment in the superhero series starring Chris Hemsworth as the Norse deity, according to a source close to the film.

A New Zealand director, writer, actor, and comedian, Waititi is known for helming the vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows, the offbeat rom-com Eagle vs. Shark, and several episodes of the HBO musical comedy series Flight of the Conchords. His name is pronounced Tie-ka Why-tee-tee.

If the Ragnarok deal is made, it would mark the latest instance of Marvel tapping directors who have shown promise on modestly scaled projects without having overseen a big-budget action movie. Previous examples include Alan Taylor (who was known for his television work before directing Thor: The Dark World), Joe and Anthony Russo (also known for television work before doing Captain America: The Winter Soldier), and Peyton Reed (who directed Bring It On prior to making Ant-Man).

Waititi, who is of Maori and Jewish descent, is no stranger to Marvel parent Disney, having worked on the screenplay for Moana. He also has a superhero film under his belt, albeit as an actor: He played a small part in Warner Bros’. Green Lantern.

Thor: Ragnarok is scheduled to hit theaters July 28, 2017.
