Pop culture has changed quite a bit in the past 25 years. Since EW began in 1990, there have been seismic shifts in the way we view movies, TV, music, books, and every other piece of culture we consume.

On Thursday, EW Deputy Editor Meeta Agrawal stopped by NBC’s Today show to reveal the 10 most influential pop culture moments since 1990, in honor of the magazine’s 25th anniversary. Among the picks: the premiere of Sex and the City, the passing of superstar Michael Jackson, and — at number one — Ellen Degeneres’ character on Ellen coming out during a 1997 episode. Some moments paved the way for radically changed programming (think Survivor‘s influence on reality TV); others, like James Cameron’s Titanic, redefined the idea of a “box office hit.”
