Spectre box office: UK opening day grosses $6.4 million

Like Moneypenny said in the trailer, James Bond is just getting started. Spectre, the latest installment in the super-spy franchise, opened Monday night in the U.K. to a stellar $6.4 million.

Directed by Sam Mendes and starring Daniel Craig, the 24th Bond movie screened in 647 theaters last night, rolling out just 15 minutes after the 8 p.m. world premiere in London.

Spectre‘s Monday tally lagged behind the first day’s gross for the previous Bond outing, Skyfall, which raked in about $10 million in 2012. That film, however, opened on a full Friday and thus had more showtimes, so an apples-to-apples comparison is tricky.

Time will tell if Spectre can ultimately match or top Skyfall, a critical and commercial hit that grossed $1.1 billion worldwide and stands as the highest-grossing film ever in the U.K.

Named for the international terrorist organization that looms large in the Bond mythos, Spectre finds Craig’s Agent 007 traveling the globe and confronting ghosts of the past as he tries to take down the sinister cabal. Christoph Waltz, Lea Seydoux, and Monica Bellucci co-star.
