With a brewing sire-line war in New Orleans, The Originals viewers would expect to find Marcel on Team Klaus, considering that if Klaus dies, he dies. And yet, when Elijah’s first progeny, Tristan, comes to town with a secret vampire society and an interest in Marcel, things get a bit complicated.

EW talked with Charles Michael Davis about Marcel’s role in all of this (not to mention his Tinder profile):

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: This gala looks real classy.

CHARLES MICHAEL DAVIS: [Laughs] It’s a little more high brow — like going to the orchestra instead of a Taylor Swift concert.

So who looks better in a suit: Marcel or Elijah?

Marcel, for sure. I think the audience gets so used to seeing Elijah in suits that Marcel wins because you don’t see it so often. So people will be like, “Damn!” You can quote me on that. [Laughs]

What is Marcel’s relationship with Aya? Is he at all intrigued by her offer?

I think he finds it all pretty mysterious and intriguing. There’s something that piques his curiosity given the fact that everything’s so mysterious. They come to town and they’re smart and talented and they’re much, much older. But with Aya particularly, she definitely impressed him when she took out some of his best guys. So she’s the point person who he has into the Strix. Who was it who followed the little rabbit down the hole? Alice! In Alice in Wonderland, she’s the rabbit.

But the Strix are Elijah’s sire line, and Marcel is from Klaus’, so are we going to see him a bit torn between the two?

I think from the outside depending on your perspective it will be a little torn. From his perspective, it’s a great thing to have allegiances with Klaus and then also be invited into the members-only club with Elijah. I think it works out in Marcel’s favor.

I was seeing some pictures of upcoming scenes with Marcel and Hayley. What is their relationship right now? Are they friends?

I hope there’s a friendship growing there; I like working with Phoebe [Tonkin]. It’s a cool dynamic where we see these people work together who were both sort of adopted into the Mikaelsons. I hope it leads to more Hayley and Marcel scenes.

Are we getting any more Marcel flashbacks?

I’ll take any spotlight episodes, flashbacks or not. [Laughs] I do like present day stuff. Marcel’s only 200 and so years old. So we did a great job with the flashbacks to World War I. Maybe if we did another war thing that touched on another era. I think that’d be pretty cool. See him out and about and alone, wandering the land. You got pretty good ideas, what do you think?

I like that you just said he’s only 200 years old.I’d kind of like to see disco Marcel.

Yeah. I just saw the Steve Jobs movie, [so] I’d like to see him come in and maybe consult, maybe help out with the whole computer era.

Turns out Marcel was behind Apple this whole time.

[Laughs] He just comes in and he’s like, “1,000 songs on a walkman, that’s all I gotta say. Imagine having every band in New Orleans in one little device, Steve. Think about it. I gotta go.” Marcel’s responsible for the iPod. Great flashback.

Who would play Jobs?

We’ll have Gillies play Steve Jobs.

Sold. Okay, the last thing I want to touch on his Marcel’s love life. Is he still waiting on Rebekah at this point? Is he too busy to think about love?

I think he was waiting. I think maybe now he’s at the point where he’s like you know what, forget it. I’m going to go out and I’m going to find something. He’s trying Tinder. He signed up for an eHarmony account. He’s on Match.com. He’s going to galas. He’s really just going to meet someone. He’s not going there for any other reason. [Laughs]

What is his bio on Tinder?

Well-to-do, ambitious. I really don’t know. I’ve never seen a Tinder account so I don’t know what people highlight. It’d probably be nothing but bitmojis. The confident one.

The Originals airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
