Preacher teaser trailer from AMC

After months of anxious waiting, comic-book fans will finally get to see the first trailer for AMC’s upcoming series Preacher during this Sunday’s episode of The Walking Dead. So says co-producer Seth Rogen on Twitter. Since every trailer gets its own teaser these days, Rogen also posted a brief clip along with his announcement.

Based on Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s acclaimed comic series of the same name, Preacher follows Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper), a small-town Texas clergyman. Custer finds himself in need of a new profession after he merges with a powerful supernatural being called Genesis (the spawn of an unholy union between angel and demon), accidentally destroying his entire congregation. In the comic, Custer decides to take to the road in search of God, who who has abandoned Heaven for fear of Genesis’ power. He is aided in this great American road trip by his ex-girlfriend Tulip and an alcoholic Irish vampire named Cassidy (played in the show by Ruth Negga and Joseph Gilgun, respectively). Together, they face off against psychotic hillbillies, a secret faction within the Catholic Church, and the Saint of Killers himself. Things get very violent and very, very irreverent.

This teaser offers only brief glimpses of all this. It starts with Custer walking down an empty country road (post-disaster?) We also see him getting in a bar fight, which he is wont to do; a significant one occurs right before the events of the comic. There’s also a brief shot of Cassidy’s trademark red sunglasses (vampires gotta keep that sunshine out). We’ll have to wait until Sunday for the full trailer and mid-2016 for the series proper to kick off.

Rogen has previously tweeted his visual influences for the series, from Westerns like Unforgiven and 3:10 to Yuma to cosmological spectacles like Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life.
