Quentin Tarantino boycott: Bill Maher to interview director

Quentin Tarantino recently broke his silence regarding the police union boycott against him, but the director will soon have a more public platform to speak out against what he has referred to as misrepresentative slander.

The man behind Django Unchained and the upcoming Hateful Eight will appear as a guest on this Friday’s episode of Real Time With Bill Maher. Tarantino will be the mid-show guest, flanked by Keith Olbermann and the roundtable featuring journalist David Frum, reporter Jillian Melchior, and former New York representative Anthony Weiner.

Tarantino flew from Los Angeles to New York City to attend an anti-police brutality rally on Oct. 24. “I’m a human being with a conscience,” Tarantino said. “If you believe there’s murder going on then you need to rise up and stand up against it. I’m here to say I’m on the side of the murdered.”

From there, police unions across the country called for a boycott against Tarantino’s films. “We need to send a loud and clear message that such hateful rhetoric against police officers is unacceptable,” the National Association of Police Organizations said in a statement Friday.

The director elaborated and clarified his sentiments from the rally in an interview with the Los Angeles Times. “I’m not being intimidated,” Tarantino told the paper. “Frankly, it feels lousy to have a bunch of police mouthpieces call me a cop hater. I’m not a cop hater. That is a misrepresentation. That is slanderous. That is not how I feel. But you know, that’s their choice to do that to me.

“What can I do? I’m not taking back what I said. What I said was the truth.”

Real Time With Bill Maher airs Fridays at 10 p.m. ET on HBO. Hateful Eight, Tarantino’s new film, is out on Christmas day.
