Annie Hall: Funniest screenplay as voted by WGA members

What’s the funniest screenplay ever written? According to members of the Writers Guild Association of America, that honor goes to Woody Allen and Marshall Brickman’s Annie Hall — which also picked up an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay in 1977. The awards were announced on Wednesday at events on both coasts, taking place at Hollywood’s Arclight Cinerama Dome and at New York’s New School.

It wasn’t the only honor for Allen, who had six other scripts singled out as part of WGA’s 101 Funniest Screenplays, including Sleeper (60), Bananas (69), Take the Money and Run (76), Love and Death (78), Manhattan (81) and Broadway Danny Rose (92). Comedy greats Mel Brooks and the late Harold Ramis also saw mutliple honors for their work, with four and three scripts, respectively.

The top five were rounded out by classic movies ranging from the 1960s to the 1980s, such as Some Like It Hot, Groundhog Day, Airplane, and Tootsie, though the inclusive list also honored a fair number of recent comedies, including Bridesmaids, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, The Hangover, and Meet The Parents.
