Rose McGowan: Caitlyn Jenner comments don't make me transphobic

Rose McGowan has clarified a Facebook post she wrote Monday, in which she called out Caitlyn Jenner for saying “the hardest part about being a woman is figuring out what to wear.”

In Monday’s post, McGowan slammed Jenner’s comments and referred to her being honored as one of Glamour‘s Women of the Year (Jenner had made the statement in an interview to BuzzFeed backstage at the event). “Caitlyn Jenner you do not understand what being a woman is about at all,” she wrote. “You’re a woman now? Well f—ing learn that we have had a VERY different experience than your life of male privilege. Woman of the year? No, not until you wake up and join the fight.”

Though McGowan ended her post with a word of support for the transgender community — “I’m happy she’s living her truth,” she wrote — the backlash led to the actress posting this follow-up message on Facebook and Twitter on Tuesday. “I am not, nor will I ever be, transphobic,” she wrote. “Disliking something a trans person has said is no different than disliking something a man has said or that a woman has said. Being trans doesn’t make one immune from criticism.”

McGowan added that she hopes to “fight alongside Caitlyn Jenner” in a quest for equal rights.

Earlier on Tuesday, McGowan referenced the backlash against her comments with a short, profanity-laced tweet.

Jenner has not responded to either comment.
