Lena Dunham's 'Max' adds Cary Elwes and Mary Birdsong

Lena Dunham’s feminism-themed comedy set against the backdrop of the 1960s is filling out its cast, adding The Princess Bride star Cary Elwes and Reno 911 alum Mary Birdsong.

The two join leading lady Zoe Kazan, who recently replaced Lisa Joyce in the HBO pilot about an ambitious magazine writer who stumbles into the second wave of the women’s movement. Elwes will play Ken Reece, editor of the magazine where Maxine Woodruff (Kazan) works, and Birdsong will play Sue, the only other female writer.

Dunham is directing the pilot for Max and will serve as an executive producer along with her Girls collaborators Jenni Konner, Murray Miller, and Ilene Landress. Miller wrote the script.

Birdsong recently appeared on the big screen in the gay-rights drama Freeheld, and Elwes is a regular on Crackle’s new original series The Art of More.
