Project Runway Junior contestant gets confusing critique from Tim Gunn

Kids these days.

The best thing about Lifetime’s new reality series, Project Runway Junior, is the contestants. Aged 13 to 17, the designers have so much energy, excitement, and passion for design. But they also have a large knowledge gap when it comes to big words and pop culture earlier than the year 2000 — which makes for hilarious television.

Last week Designer Maya couldn’t figure out if Tim Gunn liked her fabric or not because she didn’t understand the word “disinclined.” And this week Designer Ysabel has never heard of a classic ’60s television show.

Thursday’s episode is the classic unconventional design challenge, and the junior designers seem to be handling it as well as the adult designers usually do (which is to say, not always so well). As seen in the exclusive clip above, when Tim Gunn comes for critiques, he tells Ysabel that her look is a bit Gilligan’s Island — which she thinks may be a “classy, chic island.” Although Ginger was pretty chic, we have a feeling that’s not what Gunn meant.

New episodes of Project Runway Junior air on Lifetime Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET.
