The new teaser trailer for A Monster Calls introduces 12-year-old Conor (newcomer Lewis MacDougall), who’s struggling to fit in with classmates and grappling with his mother’s (Felicity Jones) terminal illness. While learning how to cope, he’s visited in the middle of the night by an enormous monster, voiced by Liam Neeson.

“There was once an invisible man who had grown tired of being unseen. It was not that he was actually invisible, it was just that people had become used to not seeing him,” Neeson growls in the trailer. “One day the invisible man couldn’t stand it any more. He kept wondering, if no one sees you, are you really there at all?”

Directed by Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage), A Monster Calls is based on the award-winning children’s fantasy novel by Patrick Ness, which finds Conor escaping into a fantasy world of fairy tales and monsters. Toby Kebbell and Sigourney Weaver also star.

A Monster Calls will hit theaters on Oct. 14, 2016. Watch the trailer, which features the theme from Cloud Atlas, above.
