Coming off his turn as a homeless man invisible on the streets of New York in Time Out of Mind, Richard Gere plays another mysterious old man in The Benefactor.

The new trailer features Gere as a Philadelphia philanthropist who reconnects with the daughter (Dakota Fanning) of his late college friends and takes her and her new husband (Theo James) under his wing. Everything’s great at first, but then questions arise. Why is he doing this? And how’d he get so rich, anyway?

The Benefactor opens in theaters and on-demand services on Jan. 15.
