Samurai Jack to return in 2017, Adult Swim announces

The era of Peak TV means no concept is off-limits for a reboot. The X-Files, Gilmore Girls, even Twin Peaks all have returns scheduled for next year. The latest resurrection? None other than Samurai Jack. Adult Swim announced Wednesday via a short teaser that the cartoon about a time-displaced samurai will return to TV in 2017. Watch it below, and check out a new poster that appears to show an armored Jack beside his enemy, the giant warlord Aku.

The original show aired 2002–2007 and lasted four seasons, accumulating a wealth of fans thank to its high-level concept and creator Gerry Tartakovsky's innovative animation style. According to Adult Swim, the new show is currently in production at Cartoon Network Studios in Los Angeles, once again under the direction of Tartakovsky. The move to Adult Swim suggests the new show may be even darker and more violent than the first iteration, which is not unprecedented for cartoon revivals (see: The Legend of Korra). Then again, reruns have aired on Adult Swim's Toonami block, which means the network's rubric for what counts as Adult Swim may simply have changed in the intervening years.

So mark your calendars for 2017, because Jack is back.
