Fox renews Wayward Pines for season 2

Wayward Pines has been renewed for a second season, EW has learned.

The first season of Wayward Pines starred Matt Dillon as a Secret Service agent on the hunt for two missing federal agents in Wayward Pines, Idaho, when he discovers he’s actually been frozen in time to start a new community in an all but destroyed world.

Wayward Pines averaged 9.4 million viewers across all platforms and a 2.2 in adults 18-49, making it the summer’s No. 1 broadcast scripted series in the demo, according to Fox.

“Wayward Pines was a huge hit for us this past summer,” said Fox Entertainment President David Madden. “We were absolutely blown away by the mysterious and surprising world that Night and his team created, and the twisting-and-turning storytelling that drew viewers in from day one. Season Two is going to take the suspense, the vision of the future and the haunting character drama to whole new levels, and we can’t wait for our fans to continue that ride next year.”

Based on Blake Crouch’s book series, Wayward Pines hails from M. Night Shyamalan, and was developed for TV by Chad Hodge, who will not be returning to the series in season 2. Mark Friedman, who’s an executive producer, will now serve as showrunner. (For what it’s worth, Hodge teased what could be in store for season 2 here.) There’s no word yet on which actors will return from the first season.

The second season will pick up in the wake of the events of the finale, in which the adults got out from under David Pilcher’s (Toby Jones) reign only to be frozen in time again by the First Generation of children. In season 2, a new arrival in Wayward Pines finds himself in the middle of a serious rebellion, as the residents battle over how to preserve the endangered human race.

Wayward Pines will return for a 10-episode second season in summer 2016.
